7 Tips on Writing Children's Books

Children’s literature is one of the most widespread forms of literature, with practically thousands of children’s books being printed all over the world. Creating children’s books can be a lucrative and highly satisfying job. And yet it’s not as easy as it may seem. What people tend to forget is that the creation of children’s books are an arduous process that will entail a lot of work. From a historical standpoint children’s books have been around for quite a while and they have helped shape the perceptions of young children all over the world.

Children’s literature in truth dates back many hundreds of years ago, even before publishing, children’s literature already existed with stories being passed through oral traditions. It is difficult to trace though the exact time and place that these stories originated.  And through the centuries children’s stories were passed down from one storyteller to another until they eventually were written down and published to be enjoyed by the public. Nowadays children’s books are becoming highly sophisticated, and can even be enjoyed by adults too. If you are thinking of writing your very own children’s book, here are a few tips to get started.
  1. Develop a sense of wonder
Children are by nature curious, and it is this curiosity that compels kids to go about their lives as if it were an adventure. Which is why if you are even thinking of writing a children’s book, you should cultivate within yourself a deep sense of wonder. Look at the world through a child’s eyes, see the world for all its beauty and bask in it.
  1. Remember your child self
Everyone was a child once and although adulthood is inevitable, it is a comfort to be able to go back and relive those glorious days of youth. Days of sunshine and play, days where everything is so certain.  It is these days that we always wish to go back to during hard times. If you are to write a children’s book you should relive those carefree days through your memories and use them as inspirations for your work.
  1. Read, read and read some more!
You should always make it a habit to read a lot. Because reading, no matter what genre or topic is a means or you to get inspiration for your work. It is also a way to clear your head and get back to the basics of good literature.
  1. Write for your target audience
A children’s book should have a simple yet vibrant storyline. Remember that you are writing for kids, so it should be emphasized that your writing should be able to keep their attention and be easy to understand at the same time. You should also make sure that you do not use complicated words that might confuse your readers. Also remember not to sound condescending in your writing. Kids may be young but they are more sensitive and intuitive than they are given credit for.
  1. Visit bookstores and libraries
Bookstores and libraries are considerably one of your greatest repositories of information on what type of stories kids like. You can ask the bookshop keeper or librarian on which Children’s books are the most popular with kids. You can use the information you have gathered as a blueprint to pattern your stories after and create the best children’s book possible.
  1. Practice your craft
As a writer you should make it a priority to practice your art every chance you get. Hard as it is to stay focused all the time you should at least put in two or three hours of practice. Remember practice makes perfect!
  1. Practice perseverance!
There is no guarantee that your book will get published right away or that it will prove to be a success, the important thing is to keep going. To persevere despite the rejections and keep believing in your abilities as a writer. If you have the courage to keep going through harsh times you can achieve anything.
