Writing a Novel: It is Easier Than you Thought!

91 (2)
Writing a novel is a multifaceted process that takes a lot of time and hard work. And this sadly turns most writers away from the thought of writing their very own book.  But in truth, writing a novel is easier to do than most people thought. And it is worth all the time and effort you put into it. All you really need is the proper mindset and the right methods to fully realize your potential as a writer. Here are some great Book writing tips on how to make writing a novel so much easier.
  • Write what you know and love!
Before you start on your novel you should know what you want to write about. It is important that your topic should be something you care about. It should be something that you truly want to work with. Your topic should also be something that you have great knowledge in. Don’t take up a topic because it is trending right now or will make you money. As it was said earlier writing a novel takes time and hard work. And if you are not passionate about your topic, you won’t be able to complete it.
  • Conduct a thorough research on your topic
One of the worst things you can do as a writer is not conducting proper research on your novel. This is because readers are very finicky about the accuracy of the novels they are reading. This is especially true if you are writing a novel about a historical event. One example of conducting proper research is the research renowned historical novelist Bernard Cornwell. The famous author was well known for creating a series of books that were set in famous conflicts throughout history. What really sets him apart from his contemporaries is the fact that he conducted an incredible amount of research on all his books. Spending hours poring over old historical documents and even going to famous, ancient battle sites to make his battle scenes as realistic as possible. It is this attention to detail and dedication to historical accuracy that makes him one of the best novelists of his time. So if you want your novel to be as believable as possible you should conduct your research as thorough as possible.
  • Make your characters likeable and believable
Your characters are by far the most important aspect of your novel. This is because characters are what gives your novel the much needed personality it requires to be entertaining. You may have the very best plotlines but without compelling characters to feature in them, your novel would just end up very bland and uninteresting. This is akin to a great screenplay not having a great cast to act it out. Which is why you should do your very best to create truly great characters. There is really no specific way to create a great character. But you should take hints from other books. You do not need to copy these characters. Just get hints from these past works because they can prove to be effective blueprints to creating great characters. But it is advisable that your character should always be relatable and likeable. If you are going to create a main character you should pattern him or her as someone you would love to be friends with. You should also make them quite quirky because quirks makes them more unique.   Just remember not to make your characters too perfect because your readers might end up getting annoyed with how perfect and unbelievable they are. Just be sure not to make them annoying either.
  • The more pressing the issue the better!
One of the best ways to get people to care about your characters is to make their issues real and pressing. It makes your character much more believable and relatable because the story can’t move forward if there are no obstacles to face. It will also be a boring story if there are no antagonist to beat. Which is why it is very important that your character has to face a truly dangerous adversary. The issues your character faces could be external or internal. Just remember that your story usually revolves around how your character deals with the problem, so it is important that you mesh your character and the problem well.
  • Stay the course
It was stated earlier that the book writing process can be difficult and you are going to be challenged through the process. So it is very important that you stay the course. Be courageous in your writing and take pleasure during the entire journey. You will have a hard time getting it published, that’s the reality of it. And there is no guarantee that your book will sell, but despite the many challenges and the uncertainty you should always remind yourself that it is all worth it. Writing a book is a once in a life time achievement and accomplishing it is truly something to be proud of.

Make your Writing More Compact and Efficient! Here’s How you Do it!

90 (2)
When you start writing a book, you are under the impression that the more pages your book has the better it is. But this is not wholly true. The number of pages your book has does not correspond to how good it is. Some books could have a thousand pages but if the book itself makes no sense, no number of pages can help it. So it is better to make your book more compact and efficient. But this is easier said than done though, because it takes efficient writing skills and discipline in order for you to fully achieve a compact and efficient book. Here are some great book writing tips that will help make your writing more compact and efficient.
  • Tighten up the slack
Bad writing habits can be the reason for overly long books. This can be due to a number of reasons. One reason is that the writer lacks the vocabulary to make quick and concise sentences. This compels the writer to write overly long and unnecessary sentences. This bad writing habit usually annoys readers because they would feel as if the writer was merely procrastinating. This would also lead the writer to overly explain every aspect of the book and ultimately bore readers.
Yet another reason for bad writing habits is the fact that some writers have only a vague idea of what it is they truly want to convey in their sentences. This would lead them to make long winding and even looping sentences that would be frustrating for any reader. Which is why you should try to make your sentences short and concise. Refrain from using superfluous words to try and impress your readers. If you write properly, your writing style will ultimately impress your readers.
  • Overly complicated storylines
Writing overly complicated storylines is very common with new writers. As a new writer you are usually very excited to make a complex and immersive story line that will draw your readers in. This is all well and good, but sometimes making your storyline too complex could leave your readers scratching their heads and wondering why they even tried to read the book in the first place. Complex storylines are an asset to any book because they help capture the reader’s attention and stimulate their imaginations, but please refrain from making it too complex because it might confuse the reader in the end. One way of making your book compact and efficient is to simplify your plotline and just have the book seen through one character’s point of view.
  • Too many characters
Good and memorable characters are usually the highlight of any great writer’s book. Thus when you are writing a novel, you should take care that the spotlight is shown on your main characters. It is also a good idea to refrain from making too many characters. This can make things confusing for you. Having various point of views can also make things very confusing for your readers and leave them asking why you even made such unnecessary characters.
  • Refrain from using flowery phrases
Most writers tend to confuse good writing with wordy writing. There is a stark difference between truly good writing and wordy writing. Good writing in truth does not take a lot of words. It is just the ability to convey your thoughts in words as efficiently as possible. Wordy writing is usually used to cover up sloppy writing and usually leaves your work to sound ineffectual and dispassionate. Thus it is always preferable that your writing be as concise as possible.
All in all, when it comes to writing in a more compact and efficient way it is always important to remember that your main intent is to convey your message to your readers. It is not to impress them with superfluous words or unnecessarily long word play. Writing in a concise and straightforward manner is truly the best way for you to reach out to your readers.

Self-Publishing your very own Novel: Here’s how you do it!

13
Writing a novel is a very immersive and enriching undertaking. It is also one of the most stressful and costly projects you will ever undertake. This is made even more evident if you are a self-published author. If you are a self-published author you are expected to be in charge of almost every aspect of the process. From the writing process to the book production aspect you are expected to be on top of your game throughout the whole publishing process. Here are some book writing tips that will help make self-publishing a novel so much easier.
  • Focus on the manuscript
Before you focus on anything else your main focus should solely be on finishing your manuscript. Creating a manuscript is by far the most difficult part of self-publishing a novel. Writing your manuscript takes a great deal of time and concentration. So while you are writing your manuscript, you should forget about other aspects of the self-publishing process. Take your time with the manuscript. Don’ rush yourself even if you do have a deadline. Remember that it is better to be slow but sure when you write. Because writing at a frantic pace just makes you prone to mistakes.
You should have a set routine to follow, that way writing will become just a habit for you. Your scheduled writing time should be at a time you are most comfortable with. You should also have a proper work place that you can write. Remember that focus is key when it comes to writing, thus in order for you to truly reach your true writing potential, you should work in a quiet and comfortable place that is conducive to writing.
It also good that you already have a main concept that you can draw from. The main concept from a novel does not come out from scratch. It usually takes a great deal of concentration in order to make a concept good enough to draw in readers. Before you even start writing your book, you should already be able to fully visualize what your manuscripts will be like. That way you can start on the manuscript without any doubts.
  • Decide on how you self-publish your manuscript
Once you are finished with your manuscript, you should now decide on how you can self-publish it. Years ago self-publishing was extremely expensive, because self-publishing back then entailed that you had to not only hire a printing press to print your book, you will also have to print out a good number of your books to sell. But there was no guarantee that your book would sell. Which means that you are taking a big risk on self-publishing a book.  This is why most writers back then always opted to sign up with traditional publishers because there is less risk.
But in this day and age, self-published writers are now given a better chance to publish their books in a more efficient and cheaper way. Services such as print on demand services are now being offered wherein the author no longer needs to stockpile books. Through print on demand services your book will only be printed once someone buys it.
Self-publishing companies are also now appearing. These companies are independent companies that help self-publishing authors publish their book for a fee. If you have the funds, these companies are highly competent and will provide you with the help you need. But if you don’t have the funding you can still produce your book on a budget through print on demand services and by doing most of the editing yourself.
  • Book Promotion
Book promotion is a very difficult prospect for most self-published authors. This is because it takes a great deal of work and funds in order to promote a book. But that does not mean that it is impossible. All you need to do is to find alternative and less expensive ways to promote your book. There are various ways that you can promote your book without having to spend a fortune.
One way is to use the internet to promote your book. The internet is one of the most potent ways to promote your book. This is because a majority of people all over the world use the internet, so posting your advertisements through there is very effective.
Social Media is one great example of promoting your book through the internet. Social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram are very potent because it allows you to gain a following. By promoting your book through these media sites your chances of having a fan increases a great deal. You can also create your own blog site and even sell your book through it.
  • Find alternative ways to sell your book
One of the main problems faced by self-published authors nowadays is the fact that most established bookstores tend to prefer well known books or books from a traditional publishing house. This is because these books are easier to sell and are less of a risk.
One of the best alternatives to bookstores is selling your book online. You can sell your book through online retailers, and combined with the print on demand services you need not stockpile your books. In truth selling your book online is less expensive and is just as effective as selling it through a bookstore.
All in all self-publishing your very own novel is a difficult but truly enlightening experience because you are truly in charge of every aspect of the process.

Your Book doesn’t have to be Too Long to be Interesting: Ways to Compress your Manuscript!

One of the biggest misconception that people have on writing a book is that it has to be a long one. This is usually due to the fact that classic books were very long. And this caused many people to think that the longer a novel is the better it is. But in truth a truly good book does not always have to be a long one. It is the content of the book that is the most important. It is also the writer’s ability to convey the message of the story in the most efficient way possible. Here are some great book writing tips on how to compress your manuscript.
  • Avoid obscure words
Using obscure words in your manuscript is good if it is a necessary part of your story. But if you are using them just to impress your readers, it is better to just avoid using them. This is because obscure words have a somewhat obscure definitions. And it takes a great amount of time to give its definition. Which is time and effort wasted on something that does not really affect the story. Which is why it is better that you avoid using obscure words and focus on the main storyline.
  • Don’t make unnecessary characters
Great characters are what make a truly memorable story. Which is why it is important that you avoid making unnecessary characters. These characters are the ones that have no effect on the story. For example, you are writing a mystery novel. You already have a main cast of characters who act as the point of view. But as the story goes on you add more characters to the story so that the main cast has more people to interact with. Just remember that when you create a character, he or she must have an effect on the overall story.
  • Avoid making overlong monologues
Monologues are usually very useful in writing a novel. They provide a way for the main character or antagonist to voice out on various subjects. This is a way for the author to make his points known. But sometimes monologues could take too much time and would ultimately lose the reader’s attention. So if you do write monologues for your characters make sure that they are quick and concise. That way they get to the heart of the matter without wasting the reader’s time.
  • Ditch the adverbs
Adverbs are useful because they give attributes and characteristics to your writing. But you don’t really need to use them in every sentence. If you want to shorten your manuscript, it is advisable that you refrain from using adverbs.
  • Refrain from using expositions
Expositions can be useful, if you write something cryptic in your story. But it can be annoying for readers if they have to read useless exposition every other page. So you should minimize your exposition. Give your readers the benefit of the doubt that they paid close attention, and you don’t have to explain every aspect of the book.
  • Write forcefully
One way to shorten your manuscript, is writing short and concise sentences. Writing in a more forceful manner helps you avoid using weak words to make a sentence. For example instead of writing the phrase “He ran speedily towards the car, and He horrifyingly hit the door” But if you want to shorten it you can just write “He ran into the car” the effect is still the same and cuts the adverbs from the sentence.
All in all when it comes to shortening your manuscript just remember that the more concise and short your sentence is, the easier it will be to read.

Distractions are a Writing Hazard! Here’s how to Get Rid of them!

89 (2)

When you are writing a book one of the most prevalent problems is the distractions that keep popping up everywhere. These distractions could be practically anything. They could be external distractions such as car noises or an uncomfortable workplace. They could also be internal distractions such as personal problems or writer’s block. One thing they have in common though is their effects on writers and their work. Don’t worry though, distractions are easy to deal with once you know how. Here are some great book writing tips on how to get rid of writing distractions.
  • Unclutter your life
One of the worst writing distractions is having a cluttered life. A cluttered life is the lack of order in a person’s life. The lack of a regimen or schedule to follow. This leads to a lack of discipline and self-control that would ultimately distract the writer to no end. Thus in order to write as effectively as possible you should unclutter your life. But how exactly can you do that?  One way is to be proactive in how you handle your day to day duties. Never leave anything to the last minute. If you have a chore or errand that needs to be done, finish it as soon as possible. Uncluttering your life will leave you more time to write your book and give you a more relaxed outlook on life.
  • Take up meditation
Writing distractions do not necessarily need to come from external sources. Sometimes distractions can also come from internal sources. They could range from psychological challenges or writer’s block. In truth internal distractions are more difficult to deal with, because it takes longer to deal with them. But one way to deal with internal distractions is using meditation to calm your mind. Meditation is a mental practice using mindfulness and breathing exercise. It was taken from Buddhist and Zen practices and have been used by a multitude of people to calm their fears and anxieties.
In truth mediation is a multifaceted concept that encompasses a myriad of teachings. But it can also be used in a more practical sense. Try this exercise if you feel overwhelmed or anxious. You go somewhere quiet. A library or your room. Sit down, cross legged or any other sitting position is good, just as long as you are comfortable. After you sit down take a deep breath.  Focus on your breathing and close your eyes. Continue to focus on your breathing and think of nothing else. Just continue to focus on your breathing for about twenty minutes, although this depends on how long you can maintain it. After meditating you will notice that your breathing is easier and your mind calm and free of anxiety. This practice is a great way to clear your mind of all distractions and make the writing process easier.
  • Go on mindful walks and hikes
Life is naturally complicated and rife with distractions. But you should always remember that it can only affect you if you let it. Learn to take things slowly. Tell yourself that there really is no hurry. Anxiety and uncertainty is one of the most prevalent distractions a writer could face. So if you are faced with these challenges try to relax. Go out and take a walk or climb a mountain. Going out and embracing nature in all its beauty will free you of unnecessary anxiety and help make your writing skills sharper.
  • Travel
One common reason for writing distraction is boredom. Although it is good that you are comfortable, being cooped up in a room all day long could get boring very fast. So what you should do is travel. Go out into the world. It does not really matter where you go. It could be a world tour or just a trip to the next town. Your main goal is a change of scenery while writing a novel, you will be surprised at how it affects you as a writer.
As a writer you should understand that distractions are a constant. You should also remember though that it is ultimately up to you whether you let these distractions affect you. Ultimately it is a test of your conviction as a writer.

Here’s some great rules to follow when writing a novel!

16Writing a novel is one of the most fulfilling things you can ever do as a writer. It is also one of the most difficult things you will ever have to do.   It will take a great deal of your time and effort to finish it. It will also take a lot of creativity and introspection to fully reach your book writing potential. Writing a book entails you to look deep within yourself as a writer and come up with something truly great. Here’s some book writing tips that you should follow if you want to effectively write a novel.
  • Find inspiration
Before you get started on writing your novel, you should find the inspiration to help you in your book writing journey. Remember that a book takes a long time to finish. It roughly takes 6 months to a year before you finish writing your manuscript. Which is why you should find the inspiration to write before you begin. The good thing though is the fact that you can find inspiration in practically anything. You can find inspiration in a loved one, or a beautiful sunset. Inspiration is easy enough to find. All you really need to do is really look for it. Being inspired is like having armor against the uncertainties of being a writer. It will be the bulwark against the realities of being a writer. Inspiration is the fuel for your writing and will definitely help you on the arduous path of being a writer.
  • Choose a genre you are passionate about
You should be very cautious on which genre you choose. This is because the genre you choose may be the genre you write in for the majority of your writing career. If you write a book about a genre and make an impression there you will be considered as an author who specializes in that specific genre. In choosing your genre you should go with one you are passionate about. If you like writing articles about history you should go with the historical fiction genre if you like fantasy novels, then high fantasy is a good choice. Just remember that your future as a writer can depend on what genre you write in.
  • Listen to music while you write
Writing takes a great deal of thought to consistently do. Which is why having a certain rhythm when you write can help make the writing process so much better. Listening to music while you write is one of the best ways to keep your writing rhythm going. It also helps with the time and can help you avoid getting writers block because your writing flow goes uninterrupted,  thus making it hard for you to second guess yourself during the writing process. As for songs, there are no specific songs to listen to. But the best suggestions would be classical music. Mozart, Beethoven and Back are great examples of classical music. Listening to classical music is proven to promote brain activity. Listening to great music will ultimately open doors to you as a writer. Just make sure that the music you listen to is not too loud or disruptive.
  • Use aspects of your life on your novel
One of the best ways to make your novel believable is adding aspects of your life into your novel. Great writers of the past have used aspects of their lives in their books. The great creator of the Lord of the Rings books, J.R.R Tolkien has used his experiences as a soldier in the First World War in his books. He used the memory of old comrades in the war to give his characters a more human persona. He also used the harsh realities of war to give his story a real world believability. So as you write your novel, always remember that the more relatable your characters and events the more readers it will attract.
  • Conduct proper research on your chosen topic
Before you even start writing your novel, you should conduct proper research on your chosen topic. Conducting proper research on your topic will allow you to write better and make your book more detailed with the facts you have researched.
  • Stay focused
As it was stated earlier writing can be very challenging. And throughout your writing journey you will be challenged and tempted to quit. But don’t let your fears stop you from achieving your dreams of being an author. Stay focused and do your very best. There is no guarantee that your book will succeed but remember that writing is not about making money. If you are a true writer the joy of writing a book is already enough. So just stay focused on your goal and do your best.

Thus having your book reviewed should be a top priority for you. Fortunately book reviews are not expensive. They only take time and patience. The best and most cost efficient way to have your book reviewed is to have friends review it for you. But if you have the opportunity to have it reviewed by a well-known actor who writes in the same genre as you even better. Don’t be discouraged if you get a bad review though. Rejection is always expected when you are writing a book.

Well-known companies have been known to hire bloggers to use and advertise their products through their blog sites. This is why you should create a blog site for your book. Blogging about your book and your journey as a writer will make you more relatable to your readers and allow you to keep in touch with them. You can also sell your book and other marketing services through your blog site.
All in all the most important thing about book promotion is the amount of work you are willing to put in. Having a big budget can be useful, but hard work will truly mean the difference between failure and success.
