Tips on How to Think Outside the Box when Writing a Story

94

Writing a truly unique story can be a difficult prospect. This is because new books containing great stories come out every day, and it is hard to avoid being a cliché. Which is why it is very important that your story is truly unique. What you need is a think outside the box story. A story that no one can allude to any other story. A story that is yours and yours alone. In truth there is no guaranteed blue print on how to write a truly unique story. But you can cultivate an outside of the box mentality that will help you create a truly great and unique story. Here are some great book writing tips!
  • Recognize the overused tropes
Every decade there is always an overused trope that comes out in writing. Overused tropes usually originate from one very famous source. It usually starts when one author gains a niche with readers and becomes highly popular. This causes other writers to jump on the back wagon and try their hand on this idea. They will try to make subtle changes on their own stories but in the end the concept still comes from the one source. For example a children’s book becomes extremely popular. Other writers seeing the popularity try to create their own children’s books using the same trope. You should avoid jumping  on the band wagon because it will make you look like you lack originality. Try to create your own storyline and develop a niche of your own.
  • Be aware of popular culture
Although you are trying to create your very own unique writing trope you should also try to be aware of popular culture. You don’t want to be labeled as a writer who can’t relate to your audience. This is why it is important to be aware of popular culture. This will allow you to make a rapport with your readers and also know what your readers like. That does not mean that you use overused tropes though. You should create your own story with your audience in mind.
  • Don’t censor your writing
Have you ever noticed that the most famous or successful books tend to be more gritty or of a more shocking nature. This is because most people are drawn to the unusual. Which is why you should never censor yourself. Be as open minded as you can. Don’t steer away from disturbing tropes. If you want to write about something write it.
  • Appeal to your readers emotions
Nothing speaks to readers more than emotions.  When a reader reads a story he or she is looking for something that will stir their emotions. Something that they could relate with and sympathize with. Which is why you should instill as much emotion in your writing as much as possible. The more emotions in your writing the more believable it is for readers.  You can instill a myriad of emotions into your story and . If your book can induce your readers to cry, to laugh, or feel a certain emotion that means your story works.
  • Never talk down to your readers
It is annoying for readers to read an oversimplified story. You may be concerned that if you use difficult words or concepts that some readers may get confused and stop reading. Never do this. If you truly want your book to be popular, give your prospective readers the benefit of the doubt that they are as well read as you and can understand your concepts. Be as eloquent as you can be and convey your story as clearly as possible.
  • Entertain you readers
One of main reasons why people read books in the first place is because they want to be entertained. This is why you should do your best to write a wholly entertaining book. You can use a myriad of humor or shock value to keep your readers entertained. Just remember that an entertained reader can always be counted on to read your work in the future.
All in all when it comes to writing a truly unique story, it usually boils up to your own creativity. So never stop reading and thinking up great new stories.
